IT DID shatter my faith, God, and the religious institution. I no longer am BOUND by the ICOC's control, physically and mentally. I've been fighting it for a few years now to be FREE of them. No longer am I afraid to speak up, no longer am I afraid to say the words, "The ICOC is a CULT" when I talk to other people about my experience.

An ICOC group seeking recognition was just defeated by Northern Illinois University Senate.

@ Author, Just because you encountered a cult why did that shake your faith in God. It is just a learning lesson remember in the Bible it says..1 John 4:1, "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."

Right now I go to an ICOC church in NY. I do share some of your opinions. I do not believe this is the 1 true church. And I do believe some churches are unhealthy and some individuals have unhealthy tactics. But the congregation I am with now is the pretty healthy. There are some congregations that I would not be a member of because of the culture within that church. But regardless of whether the church is whithin ICOC directory or not at lot of churches are like that. There are cultures within churches.

If you still put your faith and hope in God, pray that God leads you to the right church. God Bless!

@Annonymous...if this be true, then why isn't your name on here...that is because you are not allowed to speak your piece of mind in this cult they call ICOC...I am in it unfortunately...my girlfriend brought me here and dumped me after 2 years because the church told her to leave me and that God did not want her with me and she was going to to go hell because of me....all of you who follow this BS are hippocrites....Your legalism is going to continue to pull good elements from people's salt...and as Matthew 5 claims we are the salt of the earth....if you continue to mess with people's lives, you are going to lose all true believers because they are not only going to leave you but also God...Satan is loving all of you at this time....Oh...you can resesarch the Chicago Church of Christ and will see all of this going on...I plan to fight this forever because you are preying on the hearts, minds and souls of weak people...people who can not think for themselves....Jesus did not do this....

I'd like to know why all christians assume that if one's faith and belief in God fades (or in your words, "shattered") that it's necessarily a bad thing.

Christians, albeit ICC members in particular, seem to have this inability to accurately take the perspective of other people, and in particular lack critical thinking skills, with rare exception. Thus, truth-seeking christians is an oxymoron. Christianity seems to cripple one's ability to see "truth," much as christians would like to think they have a monopoly on it. It is for this reason that I no longer consider myself a "Christian."

I was a member of the ICOC from 1990-1999. I was 18 years-old when i entered the church. My experiences with the church were mixed. My overall opinion is that the church was and is about Kip and HIS mission instead if Gods plan for our lives. We were called to sacrifice in the name of GOD, special missions contibutions, weekly contirbution ect. I think that the church should have been more aboout being an example and lees about constant meetings. If you missed a meeting in those days you were "giving up meeting together". Instead of feeding yourself or providing for your family. I feel like I gave the chursh the best years of my life and got nothing in return. On my 21st birthday a party for me was cancelled because my campus ministry wasnt growing enough and we had to have an 'emergency'meeting ot fix the problem. That hurts me to this day. When i protested this event I was rebuked by leadership. The church many times seemed like a big company deemed 'Too big to fail' and it would stop for no one.
